The Piper Alpha Disaster by Charlie Greer

167 men lost their lives when a succession of gas explosions destroyed the Piper Alpha production platform. Charlie Greer will explain the background to the disaster and the repercussions for the offshore oil and gas industry.
Charlie was born and brought up in Grangemouth, where he served a mechanical apprenticeship with BP, before joining the Merchant Navy for several years as Marine Engineer. He worked offshore in the oil and gas industry for over 30 years before retiring several years ago. He was the Offshore Installation Manager of another production platform at the time of Piper A. Currently, he is President of Grangemouth Probus Club, an active member of Falkirk Children’s Panel and also Chairman of Grangemouth Old People’s Welfare committee and club.
